Call the Insurance Information Hotline . The hotline is a service sponsored by Michigan's insurance industry. It is available five days a week, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is designed to give consumers prompt, objective information on all types of insurance in addition to offering help to solve problems. The statwide toll-free number is (800) 777-8005 or call 482-0048 in the Lansing area.

8.  How do I submit a non-owner risk to the Facility?

First determine whether the applicant needs employers non-ownership liability coverage OR drive other car coverage.

Employers non-ownership liability applies to a business seeking coverage when an employee operates his or her own vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the employer. Drive other car coverage applies to an individual seeking coverage while operating non-owned vehicles.

For employers non-ownership liability coverage (Rating):

•Complete the commercial application MAIPF-04.  The applicant will always be the name of a business.

•Coverage is rated from the commercial rate pages.  BI and PD are the only coverages available.
•Often written in combination with hired car coverage.

For drive other car coverage:

•Complete the private passenger application MAIPF-03.  The applicant will always be an individual.

•Coverage is rated from the private passenger section of the manual.

•Often (but not always) requires a financial responsibility filing.

•Mandatory coverages apply, UM and MLPD (minitort) are available.  Comprehensive or collision coverages ARE NOT available.

15.What are the steps for determining the physical damage base rates for commercial trucks, tractors and trailers?

It’s extremely important that you read the headings on the pages to make sure that you have picked up the appropriate rate. By following these steps, finding the correct rate page should be a snap.

Physical Damage on Local or Intermediate Trucks, Truck-Tractors and Trailers:

  • Determine if the risk is fleet or non-fleet.
  • Determine if the vehicle is capable of dumping its load.
  • Now find the rate page (by reading the headings) that fit these variables.

For Physical Damage on Zone Rated Trucks, Truck-Tractors and Trailers:

  • Determine if the vehicle is capable of dumping its load.
  • Now find the column (by reading the headings) that fits this variable.
  • Rate all tractors as being capable of dumping their load.
16.What is my commission?

Commission is 10% of the policy premium for risks other than long haul trucking and public passenger carrying vehicles other than school buses. For these exceptions, the commission is 5% of the policy premium. Commission is paid based on premiums collected. If the policy has a mixture of risks (for example, private passenger types and taxicabs), the commission is 5% of the policy premium.
